Hempel’s Tiger Xtra is a sophisticated antifouling paint offering superior protection in the most challenging fouling conditions. Its advanced copper-based, self-polishing formulation makes it an ideal choice for both sailboats and powerboats, maintaining application at higher speeds compared to other self-polishing products in the Hempel range.

Performance & Application

Designed to excel in high-fouling areas, Tiger Xtra boasts an improved composition that yields a robust film structure for enhanced durability and more even erosion. The application of one coat provides a season's worth of protection, while a second coat extends the defence throughout the year. Its exceptional mechanical strength ensures excellent crack resistance, suitable for dry sailing or prolonged immersion.

If the vessel is regularly used at speeds above 20 knots, it is recommended to apply 3 coats of antifouling

Technical Specifications:

• Theoretical Spreading Rate: 13 m²/L [530 sq ft/US gal]
• Substrates: Applicable to glass fibre, wood, plywood, and steel surfaces. Not suitable for aluminium or light-alloy metals due to corrosion risk.
• Drying Time: At 10°C, touch dry in 8 hours, and at 20°C, touch dry in 4 hours. Re-coating can be done with no maximum time limit.
• Thinning and Cleaning: Hempel's Thinner 08080 recommended.
• Application Method: Can be applied using brush/roller or paint pad with a maximum of 5% thinning. Suitable for spray application; consult Hempel for details.
• Dry Film Thickness: 40 microns [1.6 mils] per coat.
• Overcoating: Compatible with Hempel's Light Primer, Hempel's Underwater Primer, and Hempel's Pro Tiecoat. For boats regularly exceeding 20 knots, 3 coats are recommended.
• Shelf Life: 60 months at 25°C [77°F] in original, unopened containers.

• Flash Point: 36°C [97°F]
• VOC Content: EU 426 g/L [3.56 lb/US gal]
• Storage Conditions: Store above 5°C [41°F], away from direct sunlight, rain, and snow.

Application Notes:

Before applying Tiger Xtra, ensure that surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. New surfaces should be primed with Hempel's Light Primer or Hempel's Premium Primer, followed by Hempel's Underwater Primer or Hempel's Pro Tiecoat while tacky. For maintenance, high pressure fresh water cleaning and abrading is necessary for optimal adhesion. Two coats of Tiger Xtra at 40 μm DFT should be applied, with an extra coat around waterlines and high-wear areas. It is essential to use protective gloves and eyewear during application.

• Do not use on aluminium or light-alloy metals.
• Ensure sufficient ventilation during application and drying.
• The surface must be clean before overcoating, with no direct electrical contact between copper-containing antifouling and aluminium components.
